Traditional English afternoon tea has a simple rhythm: savoury finger food, scones and small sweets served with freshly brewed tea. Recreating the style at home is more about scale and presentation than buying every possible pastry or following rigid etiquette rules.

Set the table before thinking about decoration

Each guest needs a cup and saucer, small plate, teaspoon and appropriate cutlery. Shared teapots, milk, sugar and serving stands need clear space as well. Once those practical pieces are placed, add linen and low flowers without crowding the table.

Serve in a familiar order

Start with sandwiches or other small savouries, move to scones with jam and cream, then finish with petite cakes or pastries. You can place several courses on tiered stands together, but replenishing in stages keeps food fresher.

Brew tea in smaller pots

Choose a classic black tea such as English Breakfast or Earl Grey and offer at least one alternative. Smaller pots can be refreshed rather than leaving one large brew to become bitter.

Keep sweets genuinely small

The point of afternoon tea is variety. Miniature portions let guests try more than one item without the meal becoming heavy. A couple of excellent sweets are better than a crowded stand of similar cakes.

Create the visual style with authentic pieces

Mixed floral china, silver tea ware, linen and tiered stands immediately create an English-inspired table. Classic High Tea’s vintage collection can provide these pieces for private events.
